How Do I...Use Keyboard Shortcuts?

Why Go The Long Way When You Can Take The Shortcut?

Keyboard shortcuts are used daily by most of us, whether it be paging up or down in Gmail, or copying and pasting, but many of our users weren’t aware that Presently supports keyboard shortcuts in the web version, the Chrome extension, and within our desktop application. Today we hope to change that by familiarizing our users with the keyboard shortcuts and their use! The shortcuts are the same on the site, Chrome extension, and on the desktop client:

Navigational Shortcuts

j:

Hitting the J key will move you down in the message list. This allows you navigate to a lower message to take action without having to use your mouse.

k:

Pressing the K key will move you up. Using J and K together will allow you to effortlessly move through the updates in your feed.

t:

The T key will allow you to open the threaded view for the update that’s highlighted. That means all of the relevant replies for that conversation will be displayed below the message in the correct order.

l:

When you type L it will take you into the threaded messages for the conversation you’re viewing. This means you can navigate to those other updates without needing the mouse.

h:

If you tap the H key you’ll leave that smaller threaded conversation so that you can navigate between the larger messages again.

m:

Pressing M will open the pasted text that’s attached to the selected message.

Action Shortcuts

Ctrl+m:

Holding control and pressing the M key will mark all of your updates as read and reset your unread update counter. Much easier than having to click “mark all as read” on your home page.

Ctrl+r:

Pressing R while you hold control will start a reply to the message you’ve got highlighted currently.

Ctrl+d

Hitting D with control held down will start a direct message reply to the message that you’ve got selected.

Ctrl+l

Using control and the L key will like the currently highlighted update.

Ctrl+u

If you press U while holding control you’ll focus on the update box. This is much easier than using the mouse to select the update box so you can start typing.

Esc

The escape button will take you out of the update box and back down to the update list so you don’t accidentally type something you don’t mean to.

ONE SHORTCUT TO RULE THEM ALL:

At any time on the website you can simply type a question mark (remember to hold shift, just like when you’re typing a question mark in an email) to bring up this handy quick reference menu!

Intridea - Maggie Lubberts's Home [Present.ly]

Of course it works on the desktop app too, and it looks like this:

Presently

Once I started using these keyboard shortcuts to navigate in Presently I found myself spending less time fiddling with it and more time actually collaborating with my coworkers. I’m confident if you start to incorporate even one of these shortcuts into your Presently routine you’ll notice the time saved! Please contact us if you have any questions or need any help!

How Do I Setup SMTP On My Presently Install?

Our Behind the Firewall install of Presently uses SMTP for email notifications and for invitations, so making sure it’s set up correctly is paramount to a happy Presently network! Following the steps below should ensure you to get SMTP integrated into your Presently network without any problems.

Setup:

1. Login as the administrator
2. Access “Admin” → “Mail Servers”
3. Fill in all the details for the “SMTP Settings” form
4. Click the “Test Connection” button (If it was you’ll see “connection successfully established” in green)
5. Save SMTP Settings

Here are some examples of the settings filled out correctly for two different scenarios:

Example 1: Simple relay with host without real account authentication

SMTP-settings.png

Example 2: Real account using gmail

Google-setup.png

After saving, wait for a few minutes and then test whether the mail configuration works or not. The easiest way to test the connection is to send out an invitation and see whether your colleague can receive it or not. At this point you should be getting notifications and your colleagues should be getting their invitations! (be sure to have them check their spam folder for the invite) If you’ve followed the steps for setup and you’re still not able to successfully send invitations or notifications then please consult the following steps for additional troubleshooting measures.

Troubleshooting:

First, you should check that your SMTP configuration info matches what you entered on the setup page. In the server console, run the following steps:

god restart camel

(Wait for a few seconds…)

grep -i “SMTP Server” /var/www/presently-camel/log/presently-camel.log | tail -n 1

In the readout you should be able to find your SMTP settings. Please compare them to the settings entered on the Presently setup page and make sure they are the same.

If it’s correct the next step would be to do an SMTP test in the console, just like the following, (NOTE: the bold text are typed)

[root@localhost presently]#telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1…
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is ‘^]’.
220 localhost.localdomain ESMTP Sendmail 8.13.8/8.13.8; Sat, 30 Apr 2011 04:48:44 -0400
HELO localhost
250 localhost.localdomain Hello localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1], pleased to meet you
MAIL FROM: maggie@intridea.com
250 2.1.0 maggie@intridea.com… Sender ok
RCPT TO:  dingding@intridea.com
250 2.1.5 dingding@intridea.com… Recipient ok
DATA
354 Enter mail, end with “.” on a line by itself
Subject: test

test
.
250 2.0.0 p3U8miMQ030428 Message accepted for delivery

If your results are similar to what’s listed above then that means your emails are accepted by the mail server. In this case camel should be able to send emails to the SMTP server. If your results are the same but you’re still not getting invitations you should contact your server administrator to check the mail server log to find out why it’s not sent out. If you get errors when running the above steps on console then you should copy the output and approach your server Administrator to inquire about the discrepancy.

If you believe everything is correct and you aren’t able to get it to work on your own please don’t hesitate to contact our support by visiting support.presently.com. Please include the output of any console commands you used, as well as a summary of your current settings (a screenshot works well) so that we can do our best to help you troubleshoot.

Upgrades for Presently Desktop

2011 has brought about a series of changes and updates for Presently, including an updated Chrome Extension, a slick new iPhone app, SharePoint 2010 integration and an impressive round of UI changes for the native web app. April has been our busiest month, and today we're excited to make yet another update announcement, this time concerning our new Presently Desktop app!

If you haven't already tried the desktop app, be sure to download it right now and check it out. And if you've used the desktop app in the past, grab the update today and you'll see an immediate difference in the UI, stability and power. In addition we've implemented a long list of new features to make sure that your favorite communication and collaboration tool is pushing the envelope and meets your growing demands.

All of our recent updates aim to homogenize and streamline the Presently experience across the line of our connection options. Now you'll find the same functionality, similar UI, and usability in our Desktop app, iPhone app, and (very soon) our Android app that you've always enjoyed in our native web app. Here's a quick rundown of what you can expect from the update to Presently Desktop:

New Features

  • Now you can upload assets including media, text, and other files.
  • Added syntax highlighting for pasted text attachments
  • URL shortener
  • Implemented Direct Messaging functionality
  • Can navigate through updates with your keyboard. Get the full shortcut list by pressing "shift+?"
  • We created this version around a new Titanium web kit, so it's more stable and will be easier to upgrade in the future. This allows us to keep up with technology and ensures that users will have fewer problems with starting up or closing down the application.

Interface Enhancements

  • Keep your updates stream clean by marking your unread messages as "read" with the mouse or hotkeys.
  • The update box auto-resizes. When you're not active in the update field, the box gets smaller to give you more screen real-estate. When you're ready to type in the field it auto-resizes to give you space to type.
  • No more clicking to load updates; we've implemented endless scrolling to view more updates.
  • Now displays Group Avatar on Group messages.
  • Previous versions did not support image preview, but we thought that was just silly. So we made sure that your attached image assets are auto-fitted and previewed in your update stream.

Bug Fixes

  • Now you can resize the main window! This was a bug in the older version of the application, but we made sure to take care of it with this update.
  • Are you a Windows OS user? You will be happy to know that we are taking care of your needs. This update makes Presently Desktop an equally great experience for Windows users as it does for Mac users.
  • We've tackled a long list of performance issues and bug fixes. That translates to a faster, more intuitive and stable application for our users.

Visuals

It's fun to talk about all the technical changes we've made to the desktop app, but it's even more fun to show you! Below is a screenshot of the Windows and Mac versions of the Presently Desktop app in action at Intridea:

More to come!

We've been busy making your microblogging experience more pleasurable and intuitive so that you can be more productive; and we're not finished! Our new Android app is waiting to be released in the Marketplace, and we'll be sure to update you as soon as it's available for download. Work continues at Intridea to improve Presently across all platforms. We'd love to hear your feedback about the changes we've been making. Connect with us on Twitter or send us an email and let us know your thoughts!

Presently Chrome Extension Update

Today, we're releasing some updates for Presently's Chrome Extension. Current users on version 0.0.4 will notice a few changes in version 0.0.5. Here's a rundown of the update:

  • We’ve improved security. In order to give the same level of support to ssl-disabled instances as we do to ssl-enabled instances, we now utilize full-host accounts. This means that you'll need to enter your full url, including protocol (i.e., https://example.presently.com instead of example.presently.com). Once you update this in your settings, though, you won't need to worry about it again.
  • In previous versions, it was possible to submit an update with no text. Now, updates with no text will not go through.
  • In an effort to keep updates and conversations coherent and organized, the application maintains the threading relationship through inline replies.

If you're not already using the Presently Chrome Extension give it a try today! It gives you full access to your Presently network, letting you view and post updates and stay up-to-date throughout the day. The small notification icon that sits next to your address bar is unobtrusive yet distinctive enough to offer you a gentle reminder that you have unseen updates waiting for you.

Here's how to get started:

  • Visit the Chrome store here to download the latest version of the Presently Chrome Extension.

  • Once you've downloaded the app, customize your settings:
  • Now you're ready to use Presently from Chrome!
  • What is Presently?

Presently is the perfect microblogging solution for businesses. Communicate and collaborate in real-time, in a secure Twitter-like environment built for the enterprise. If you're not using Presently yet, let me give you a few reasons to check it out:

    • Empower your employees - increase productivity and creativity through collaboration via Presently.
    • Enable your employees to easily share files and media.
    • Easy solution for groups or departments to collaborate on projects.
    • Track ongoing conversations with threaded view and inline reply options.
    • Past information is available in an instant through Presently's search tool.
    • Our Desktop, Mobile, and Web applications give you the flexibility you need to access Presently anytime, anywhere.

So try it out today and see what the power of real-time collaboration and communication can do for your company. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it!
